Introduction to Icareus Subtitling and Captions Tool
With the Icareus Subtitling Tool you can make both captions and subtitles, the difference being that captions are in the same language as the language spoken in the video, while subtitles are used to translate the video's language to a different one. (For brevity, it is called the Subtitling Tool instead of the Subtitling and Captions Tool.)
The tool opens into a new tab. The tool interface is as shown in the image below:
There are different ways to add subtitles or captions to videos. You can:
- Write them manually with the tool
- Edit an existing subtitle/caption file
- Import a ready .txt file (e.g. speech transcription) to the tool and create subtitles from that
- Use the automatic subtitle generation AI tool to generate raw/unrefined subtitles that can be further manually edited with the subtitling tool

The key elements of the subtitling tool
Video player
For viewing the video you want to caption/subtitle.
Timeline
A tool to manage and adjust your subtitles and captions.
Parts of the timeline, from top to bottom:
- Current time / full duration of the video
- Progress bar / timeline of the video
- Subtitle timeline
- Subtitles
- Red timeline indicator
Progress bar
The red progress bar with the yellow box at the end show how much of the video has been watched, and where you are on it. The length of the video is spread across the width of the browser window, with the leftmost end being the start, and the rightmost end naturally being where the video ends. You can quickly change where you are by either clicking on where on the timeline you want to be, or by dragging the yellow box there.
Subtitile timeline
The vertical red indicator line shows your location on the subtitle timeline. As you move forward, the indicator remains fixed in place - instead, the
timeline and the subtitles on it move from right to left.
A subtitle box will appear blue as long as it is crossing the indicator line. The subtitles in a blue box are the subtitles that are
currently visible in the video. Inversely, when the indicator is no longer touching the subtitle box, the box will no longer be blue and the subtitles no longer displayed on the video.
Your location, and the location of subtitles on the timeline, can be adjusted when dragging with the mouse. Drag on the timeline to move yourself, and on a subtitle to move it.
Shortcut keys
These are the shortcut keys available to use in the subtitling tool:
