Importing .txt file to be used for subtitles or captions

There are different ways to add subtitle or caption to videos:
  1. Write them manually with the subtitle tool
  2. Edit an existing subtitle/caption file
  3. Import a ready .txt file (e.g. speech transcription) to the tool and create subtitles from that
  4. Use the automatic subtitle generation AI tool to generate raw/unrefined subtitles that can be further manually edited with the subtitling tool
This article is about option 3.

Importing .txt files

A .txt file needs to be formatted as below, for the captions/subtitles to appear as intended in the subtitling tool:



ENTER = Change line
EMPTY LINE = New subtitle starts

You can import the text file from the "Upload file for editing" section by clicking the "Select file" button.





It will open the file dialog:



Select the .txt file and click "Open". The subtitles will now appear in the subtitling tool.

All subtitles will initially be 0.3 seconds long by default when entering them through this method. You will need to edit them manually to get the timing correct.



You are ready start editing.

Notice that in addition to .txt files, you can also open ready subtitle files from here, including WebVTT and SRT files.

Saving and exporting subtitles to video

You can save the subtitle file with these buttons:


In order to create a new subtitle file you need to click the 'Save as' button. It will open a pop-up:



Here you can name the subtitle. The good way is to name it is with the language used:



Click 'Save' to save the subtitle file.

The subtitle file will then appear in the subtitles list in the "Subtitles" tab.



You can close the tool.
